Word Puzzle Tips: Keep Your Board Open and Your Combos Rolling
Published 2026-10-22
Word Smashing is a race between your vocabulary and a filling board. Every turn, three new letters grow into empty squares, so the space on screen is your most valuable resource. These tips help you spend it wisely and score more along the way.
Think in paths first
To move a letter you click it, then click an empty square. The move works when there is a clear path between the two. Before you pick up a tile, trace the route with your eyes. A tile boxed in by neighbours is easy to rescue once you clear one of them, so start with the letters that already have open lanes and let the board unlock itself.
Read in every direction
Words count when they run up, down, forwards and backwards. That means a row reading TAC from left to right holds CAT in reverse, and a column reading DOG from top to bottom is ready to score. Scan each line from both ends. Many players find their best words on the second glance, simply by reading the row the other way round.
Know your difficulty
The word length you need depends on the level you choose:
- Easy accepts words with 2 or more letters.
- Medium accepts words with 3 or more letters.
- Hard accepts words with 4 or more letters.
On Easy, short words are a great way to clear room quickly. On Hard, a single four letter word takes planning, so set up two partial words and finish them on the same turn.
Aim for the double
When one move completes two words at once, the game shows Double Points and doubles the score for that turn. The easiest way to set one up is to place a letter at a crossing, where a row and a column both need the same missing tile. Keep an eye out for an almost finished word in each direction that shares an empty square.
Chain combos
Make a word on one turn, then make another on the next, and the combo counter starts climbing. From the second word in a row you receive bonus points that match the combo count, so a chain of four words in four turns pays a growing reward each time. A turn without a word resets the counter, which is a good reason to keep a few easy words ready as backup moves.
Spend high value letters on purpose
Each tile shows a small number, its point value, in the style of classic Scrabble scoring. Words are scored by adding up their letters, so a short word built from valuable tiles can outscore a longer word of common ones. When two options are available, check the numbers on the tiles and choose the richer one.
Clear space before it is urgent
Because the game ends when the board is full, making words does double duty: you earn points and clear squares. A good habit is to make a word every turn even when a bigger play looks possible two moves away. The steady clearing leaves you room to build that bigger play later.
Names and places
Everyday vocabulary scores reliably. Common nouns, verbs and colours are accepted words, while some place names and people names sit outside the word list.
