Build Your English Vocabulary With Themed Word Puzzles
Published 2026-10-22
Vocabulary sticks when you meet words repeatedly and use them in an enjoyable setting. Word Smashing includes a Learn English section that groups words by theme, so each game becomes a short practice session on one topic.
Pick a theme that matters to you
The Learn English page offers 18 levels. Choose from Colors, Animals, Mammals, Fish, Birds, Foods, Household Items, Kitchen, Bedroom Furniture, Drinks, Fruit, Vegetables, Vehicles, Boys Names, Girls Names, Unisex Names, Months and Brands. Start with the topic you meet most in daily life. A learner who cooks at home may enjoy Kitchen and Vegetables first, while a learner planning travel might head to Vehicles and Months.
Make as many themed words as you can
Each level challenges you to build words from the chosen category. The goal is to make as many of that type of word as you can, using the same rules as the main game. Letters grow onto the board every turn, you slide tiles along clear paths, and words can read up, down, forwards or backwards. Because the target words are visible in the level, you can use them as a checklist and tick them off as you spell them on the board.
A simple weekly routine
Short and regular sessions work well. Here is an easy plan:
- Monday: play Colors and say each word aloud as it appears.
- Tuesday: play Animals, then write three sentences using animals you found.
- Wednesday: play Foods or Fruit and match the words to items in your kitchen.
- Thursday: play Months and practise the spelling of the months in order.
- Friday: revisit your favourite level and aim for a higher score.
Say it, spell it, use it
When a word clears from the board, pause for a moment. Say it, spell it letter by letter and think of a sentence. The game gives you the spelling practice, and the extra seconds of speaking turn recognition into recall. Reading words backwards on the board is also a fun way to notice how letters combine, since a word like STAR reverses into RATS.
Learning with children
The one tile at a time movement makes the game friendly for shared screen time. Take turns choosing which tile to move, and let the child read out the word you form together. Themes such as Colors, Animals and Fruit give young learners familiar topics and plenty of chances to celebrate.
Grow into harder modes
Once a theme feels comfortable, try the main campaign. Easy accepts words of 2 or more letters, Medium asks for 3 or more, and Hard asks for 4 or more. Moving up gradually stretches your vocabulary from short everyday words to longer ones.
Keep it social
Challenge a friend by sharing the link. Comparing scores on the same theme turns a solo practice session into a friendly competition, and talking about the words you found helps them settle in memory.
