Spelling Practice That Feels Like Play: Learn Letter Patterns

Published 2026-10-22

Fast, accurate spelling comes from recognising letter patterns at a glance. Word Smashing gives that skill a daily workout, because every board is a grid of letters waiting to be read in several directions.

Scan like a reader

Start each turn by sweeping across the rows and then down the columns. Words count when they run up, down, forwards and backwards, so each line offers two readings. This habit trains your eyes to find word shapes inside a jumble, which is the same skill you use when proofreading your own writing.

Collect common endings

Some letter groups appear in many English words. Keep these in mind as you play:

  • ING, as in RING, SING and KING.
  • ER, as in OVER, HIGHER and TIMER.
  • ED, as in PLAYED and JUMPED.
  • S at the end of a word, which turns many singular words into plurals.

When you spot one of these endings forming on the board, look at the letters before it and see which word you can complete.

Build from short words to long ones

Easy mode accepts words with 2 or more letters, which is ideal for warming up. Medium raises the minimum to 3 letters, and Hard raises it to 4. Treat these as stepping stones. Start on Easy to settle into the rhythm, then move to Medium when short words feel automatic, and finally try Hard to practise longer patterns.

Use point values as feedback

Every tile displays its point value, and a word scores the sum of its letters. As you play, you begin to notice which letters carry more points. Seeing the score pop up after you spell a word is instant feedback that your spelling worked.

Practise under friendly pressure

Three new letters grow into the board every turn, so you always have a reason to keep moving. This gentle pressure encourages quick decisions without a stopwatch. Try a round where you make one word on every turn. The combo counter rewards each consecutive word, giving you a clear signal that your streak is going well.

Play head to head

The versus mode lets you play red against blue, with 1 Player or 2 Player options. You can make words with anyone's letters, so you read the whole board rather than only your own tiles. Reading your opponent's letters stretches your pattern recognition and shows you words from a fresh angle.

A five minute warm up

  1. Open a campaign level on Easy.
  2. Scan each row from left to right, then from right to left.
  3. Scan each column from top to bottom, then bottom to top.
  4. Make the word that gives the most points, and note the pattern you used.
  5. Repeat until the round ends, then try to beat your score.

Take it further

Pair the game with the Learn English themes to practise spelling in context. After a round on Fruit or Vegetables, write the words you remember from memory and compare them to the list. The mix of play and recall builds confidence quickly.
